Mohamed El-Sayed El-Badawy El-Morsi Khalil
Professor of Rhetoric and Literary Criticism, Al-Azhar University
Professor of Arabic rhetoric and literary criticism at Al-Azhar University. He previously served as professor at King Faisal University in Al-Ahsa and associate professor at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah. He earned his doctorate in rhetoric and criticism from Al-Azhar University in 1995 with first-class honours, and his research covers Qur’anic rhetoric, prophetic eloquence and the inimitability of the Qur’an. He presented the 75-episode programme Balaghat al-Rasul on Egypt’s Holy Qur’an Radio, and holds an ijazah in Hafs ʿan ʿAsim via al-Shatibiyyah.
He graduated from the Faculty of Arabic Language at Al-Azhar University in 1986 with distinction and honours, ranking first in his class in each of his four years, having earlier ranked first nationwide in the Azhari secondary certificate (literary track) in 1982. He went on to earn a master’s degree in rhetoric and criticism from the Faculty of Arabic Language in Mansoura in 1991 with distinction, and a doctorate in rhetoric and criticism in 1995 with first-class honours.
He began his academic career as a teaching assistant at the Faculty of Arabic Language in Mansoura, Al-Azhar University, in 1987 and rose through the ranks to full professor. He served as associate professor at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah and as professor at King Faisal University in Al-Ahsa, and has been a professor at Al-Azhar University since 2023.
His research interests include questions of Arabic rhetoric, Qur’anic and prophetic rhetoric, the inimitability of the Qur’an, literary criticism and the study of Arabic poetry; he also writes poetry. He has supervised many master’s and doctoral theses and has reviewed promotion files for full and associate professorships at Saudi, Arab and Egyptian universities.
He is a member of the Arabic Language Academy in Makkah, the International Union of the Arabic Language and the Egyptian Writers’ Union. He presented the 75-episode radio programme Balaghat al-Rasul (“The Eloquence of the Prophet”) on Egypt’s Holy Qur’an Radio.
